Hay Festival

We had a hectic but enjoyable day at The Hay Festival. Our first stop was the Starlight Theatre where a lady from the British Board of Film Classification explained how films were awarded different certificates. We then watched Paddington and discussed which certificate we would give it and why. The children were very observant and asked some thoughtful questions.
We enjoyed a quick picnic lunch and ice cream in the sunshine before heading off to our next workshop - the author Stephan Pastis. He was very entertaining and we all enjoyed finding out how he became a children's author ( he used to be a lawyer!), what inspires him and how he draws the illustrations for his Timmy Failure books.
A great day and hopefully the first of many visits to the festival.

Maths Detectives

What a busy week we've had! Today we became detectives solving a variety of mathematical problems to find out who stole the valuable x-cubes fromTechniquest. We solved problems involving number patterns, time, volume, weight and height and then had to use the information to identify who the burglar was.

Naiya and Lewis had to build a metre cube as quickly as possible.
Which shape has the biggest volume?
Keeping a record of our answers.
Investigating the link between arm span and height. Would Jacob be able to press the button and open the door at the same time?

Back in class we used our results along with the profiles of the suspects to find out who the burglar was.
